How to post consistently on Instagram and Facebook

A simple weekly routine, and what to do when you run out of ideas.

The short answer

Decide your posting days once, prepare a week of posts in one sitting, and schedule them. Posting "when you have time" is what causes the gaps.

Step 1 — Pick your days

Choose two or three fixed days, for example Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Fixed days turn posting from a decision into a habit.

Step 2 — Choose four or five themes

Themes stop the blank-page problem. Most small businesses can use these:

Rotate through them. You will not run out.

Step 3 — Prepare a week in one sitting

Set aside one hour a week. Write and design all of that week's posts together. It is faster than starting from nothing three times a week.

Step 4 — Schedule ahead

Meta Business Suite is free and lets you schedule posts for Facebook and Instagram in advance. Schedule the week, then forget about it.

Step 5 — Keep your look the same

Use the same colours, logo position and tone on every post. People should recognise your post before they read your name.

Twelve post ideas for when you run out

  1. One service, explained in two sentences
  2. Your opening hours, especially before a holiday
  3. A question customers often ask, with the answer
  4. A member of your team and what they do
  5. How to book, order or reach you
  6. Something new this month
  7. A seasonal tip related to your trade
  8. Where to park or how to find you
  9. What makes your business different
  10. A thank you to your customers
  11. A short video walking through your space
  12. A reminder of a service people forget you offer

What to do when you miss a week

Start again on your next posting day. Do not apologise in a post, and do not post five times to catch up.

When to hand it over

If you have tried a routine twice and it did not last, that is normal. It means posting should be someone else's job, not that you failed.
